2017-11-25 Four new publications: The Workbasket, a tapestry pattern, framing pictures, and a special pattern!

FUNDRAISING

Our current fundraising brought in 4.115 USD so far this year. Thank you, thank you! Still 885 USD to go!

The maximum small donation is 1000 USD. That is what you can give over the entire year 2017 and still have it count as small donation. Go over that and you’ll join the board members and other large donors.

The Workbaskets are waiting for us (transport will be around 500 EUR ex VAT) and though scanning is mostly volunteer work, for the editing I will need to hire extra people – at least if we want them published in our lifetime, and we do want that. I made a small calculation and if we manage to get 5000 USD, we should be able to cover a good chunk of the costs. We are doing well in reaching that goal!

If we run out of money, we’ll have to make do with what we have – slower publication rate and overworked editing volunteers. Because we all have a life beside APL (although mine is currently 2/3 APL and 1/3 sleeping, with little bits of housekeeping in between), there’s only so many hours that we can reasonably spend on this. Help us raise money and we can get more help!

F-TC013: St. Catherine of Alexandria

A lovely Berlin woolwork pattern of Saint Catherine, with her crown and martyrs palm, as well as the wheel that came to bear her name. On closer inspection she also has a sword. This is one of a series of religious Berlin woolwork patterns, and it has been charted since the summer, but I’ve held it back for publication on this date. The image was donated by ebay seller tinaldw, already well-known to us for many other patterns. Thank you, Tina! For more information, see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Catherine_of_Alexandria

B-SW032 Hasluck – Mounting and Framing Pictures

This book does not care about what’s inside the frames, just how to frame. And it is thorough: not just to buy a frame and snap the picture inside, but how to make a frame yourself, apply gilding, and there’s a section about cutting passepartouts, and making frames within frames. It is material that has been published bit by bit in a magazine, and is now collected and edited in this very interesting do-it-yourself publication. It apparently was quite popular and well-sold, because original copies still are available for low prices.

And of course another Workbasket issue! A crocheted Afghan, Snowflake quilt, crocheted insertion and lace. The crocheters will have a their workbaskets filled.

H-HB001 Small Persian tapestry square

A very nice small square pattern, no makers mark anywhere. It’s a zigzag pattern in a border. The image was donated by Atelier HB in Austria, and although the pattern sheet itself is in bad condition, the charted pattern looks quite nice. Muted colors, simple design. It might even be adapted to an overall pattern, if you leave the red triangles out. Thank you, Helmut!

FUNDRAISING

Yes, I repeat the plea for donations, in order for the project to survive and flourish. Especially for those Workbaskets! If you value our work, and you can afford it, we are grateful for every dollar. And I mean it: those 1 dollar donations are as welcome as the larger ones. Many grains of sand a mountain will make!

Donate now to support the Antique Pattern Library project to pay for such things as database and website development, web hosting costs, data entry, scanning equipment, and help us meet the public funding ratio, which allows us to keep our nonprofit status, making your donations tax-deductible, depending on where you live and on the local tax laws and tax treaties.

Scan donations count too! They save us room (for the books) money (for the shipping price and customs duties), and time (for scanning).

And if you are an Amazon customer, you can also support us via Amazon Smile. If you click on the Amazon link before you start shopping, Amazon will set aside a little bit from their profit on what you spend and give that to us.

The limit of small donations is 1000 USD. It increases if we get more small donations. That’s the limit to what you can donate per year and still have it count towards the small donations. It’s recalculated every year. If you donate more, the IRS puts your donations on the other side of the public funding ratio. So, if you were planning to donate just above the limit, give some to another organization, buy a cup of coffee and donate just the limit amount.

On the other hand, we are looking for people who can afford a one-time larger donation to support our goals for the coming year, which will cost us some money. It will help speed up our publication rate, and make more time available for the actual library work, which is sadly suffering, because we as Board members have to spend more time than we like on bookkeeping and IRS compliance and stuff like that. Necessary, but it cuts into the time we have for the Library. Your donations will help us hire help for the elementary tasks and for editing.

If you can’t afford to give anything, which also happens in these difficult times, introducing the Library to people who don’t know of it yet, is very useful, since it broadens our user base and therefore also our donor base.

Anything you donate for the Library, goes to the Library. If you don’t mind it going to cover our overhead, mark your donation to NMA General. To give you an idea of what your donation would do: USD 10 pays for our hosting costs for a month (at the moment) or an hour of administrative assistance. USD 50 allows us to take one of our RESERVE publications and release it for publication. USD 100 pays for 1TB backup for the scans and edited files. (Currently we have 5 TB data.) Larger donations in the past have paid for fast A3 scanners, website help, and hours of editing, as well as a start with putting our Library records online in a way that they will show up in professional library searches.

Thank you all, and enjoy the new and old treasures!
